This process causes forest resources and biodiversity to disappear and environmental services to weaken, which affects local people and businesses.
In the Greater Mekong countries, where land tenure systems are weak, this agriculture-induced deforestation also causes social conflict and migration. With market-driven commercialization of agriculture, subsistence farming is lost along with sustainable land use practices.
