Project Brief: WoodAI

Posted on 11 August 2025

An AI-powered smartphone app to help reduce the risk of garment factories contributing to deforestation.

The WoodAI smartphone app empowers global fashion brands and their Cambodian supplier factories to help identify wood species, aiding in the sustainable management of their wood supply and reducing risk of deforestation.

In Cambodia, illegal logging in forests is a significant threat to local biodiversity. Garment factories use an estimated 700,000㎥ of wood annually to power their boilers, with an estimated 400,000㎥ of wood sourced from forests (Geres, 2023). Until recently, fashion brands and factories lacked ways to determine whether their wood supply came from forests. The WoodAI app fills an essential gap in methods for tracking biomass origins in Cambodia. Factories can obtain critical data through this tool to transition to a more responsible wood supply, shifting from forest wood species to plantation wood species.
